On May 10, 1988, a San Diego jury convicted Carpenter of first degree murder in the slayings of Richard Stowers, Cynthia Moreland, Shauna May, Diana O’Connell, and Anne Alderson. Carpenter was also pronounced guilty of raping two of the women and attempting to rape a third.

Hello! During the summer of 1978, My two girlfriends and I were backpacking alone at night at the tender age of 15 in the Point Reyes National Seashore. We bumped into you on trail where it splits to either Glenn Camp or Wildcat Camp. I have wondered to this day, why you didn’t come after us?
I also worked for a German car repair shop in San Rafael, and met your girlfriend at the time of your arrest. She loved you and was DEVASTATED and said, “He was the nicest boyfriend I ever had.”
